Tutor with us
Are you interested in volunteering to support high school students? Our summer program is your chance to make lifelong friends, develop professional skills, and share your academic knowledge with the community!
Each summer program is organised by a team of Program Directors. Director recruitment takes place after our January program in the first half of each year. You can read materials from our last Director recruitment cycle.
How do I apply to volunteer?
Tutor applications for the 2026 VCE Summer Tutoring program will open later in 2025. For now, you can submit an expression of interest below.
Volunteers are eligible for a tutor role if they have completed six months of tertiary study, or have previous experience with the program and hold a valid Victorian Working With Children Check (WWCC) or equivalent. Please reach out to program@vcesummertutoring.au if you have any questions about this.
All volunteers must undertake an interview with the Program Directors before they are offered a position at our summer program. For the 2025 program, we ran two rounds of interviews in September and November, with some interviews occurring across December as dependent on program need.

The volunteer experience
VCE Summer Tutoring was an enjoyable and enriching experience. In particular, having the opportunity to have a direct impact on issues of educational disadvantage and inequity was one of the most fulfilling aspects of the program. I really enjoyed being able to apply my previous tutoring experience and knowledge to my role by empowering other tutors to enhance their own teaching skills, and provide high-quality lessons to our engaged and enthusiastic students.

The VCEST program is a great way for volunteer tutors to offer students a valuable learning experience before they commence their studies. It is an extremely interactive program with several roles to undertake in order to optimise the student experience. The classes and one on one sessions as well as the additional workshops and seminars are a great way for students to engage in the program. The volunteers are very passionate individuals who are all determined to address educational disadvantage in Victoria.

I loved my experience at VCEST!! If you're considering signing up, I would say go for it!! I got so, so much support from everyone around me, and came out of the program with more friends than I came in with.

My experience as a tutor at VCE Summer Tutoring was nothing but positive. It was fantastic getting to know and learn from other tutors and teachers during the program, as well as obtaining real, hands-on experience teaching in a large classroom setting. I had the opportunity to refine and broaden my skills as an educator, which I am now keen to take into my private tutoring - and I have made some good friends along the way. I have already recommended this program to others!

Educational initiatives aside, not many programs can match the vibes of VCE Summer Tutoring, period. Beyond tutoring, we’ve had so many opportunities to interact with and get to know other students and tutors in a very welcoming environment, and there’s a true sense of community amongst everyone on program. If you’re looking to make an impact on tackling educational disadvantage while making lifelong friends along the way, look no further.

What does volunteering with our program involve?
At our program (typically two weeks in early January), all volunteers participate as tutors to deliver lessons and one-on-one tutoring sessions with students, with the ability to also undertake Specialist Roles. The minimum on-program time commitment is about 17 hours over the two weeks.
Our Volunteer Academic Tutors deliver a wide range of subjects, from Ancient History to Vietnamese. Our classes are all focused on the VCE curriculum, which is the main Year 11 and Year 12 study program taken by high school students in Victoria. Guidance about content and engaging students is available to our tutors. More information about these subjects is available on the VCAA website.
There are also opportunities to take on Specialist Roles, which have additional functions to support program activities and participants. Volunteering with a Specialist Role team is a fantastic opportunity to gain further professional skills and connection with the community.
Click on each of our roles below to learn more about them. You’ll be able to read the most recent Role Descriptions, see what skills you can develop by volunteering with us, and hear from our volunteers about their experiences at the program.
Volunteer Academic Tutor

It's completely enhanced our ability to teach and communicate with students, especially in doing classes with potentially more than one or a larger group of students, which is a new experience for me. Building confidence in that area and being able to improve my skills is definitely something I've enjoyed throughout the program.
— Dulcie, 2025 volunteer
As a Volunteer Academic Tutor, develop and refine excellent communication, content delivery and facilitation skills by delivering subject-specific lessons to a class or two of 1-15 students, either by yourself or with another tutor. Tutoring in the VCE Summer Tutoring environment also allows you to acquire leadership and mentorship experience, empower the next generation of students, and deepen your own subject knowledge for your tertiary studies.
Through being a tutor, I learned to organise my time better, teach content to students, and gained lots of new friends. Before the program began, I was very nervous, as I had no experience in teaching. However, now teaching doesn't seem so daunting anymore, and I've come to enjoy teaching a lot!

I was really nervous about accepting the Subject Coordinator role, but I was really, really pleasantly surprised at the amount of support I got from the Program Directors, from the rest of the tutors, and really just the entire team. I would absolutely go for it. It’s a really great experience, and there’s always someone who’s happy to help.

One thing I enjoyed was being a Teaching Support Officer. I was able to work closely with tutors and help them improve their teaching skills to ultimately improve student experience. Something that surprised me about being a TSO was how closely we would work as a team, which would allow us to build such meaningful connections. Overall, I had a great experience. Highly recommend!

Welfare Officer

Being in the Welfare team was really special for me, as the two weeks on-program gave me the opportunity to directly connect with others and feel a sense of belonging. I really enjoyed this social aspect, especially getting to interact with people with a wide diversity of backgrounds and skill sets. The role constantly encouraged me to look at things from a different perspective, as well as teaching me a lot about promoting wellness within students, tutors and myself.
— Natalie, 2025 volunteer

Supporting participant wellbeing at VCEST allows you to undertake valuable training on child safety and managing welfare-related situations, share your personal experiences with students to foster a sense of identification and belonging within the program, and refine your problem-solving and interpersonal skills in facilitating conversations and responses for welfare-related challenges.
Being a Welfare Officer has really helped me to develop my interpersonal and communication skills. There have been a lot of experiences where I’ve had to speak with students in sometimes one-on-one situations just to see how they’re going with the program, and really checking in on them. Cases like Book Club or the Welfare Panel that I had to run and organise have been really great for communicating with such a wide variety of people – I think being able to do this is so, so important nowadays in the workforce.

Specialist Role Coordinator
At VCEST I had the pleasure of being a Group Activity Leader Coordinator, which had the responsibility of organising social events and group meetings for students to bond. The most rewarding part of this role was seeing the new friendships that blossomed between students during the activities that we ran. Furthermore, I was able to work with a passionate and energetic team of volunteer tutors to deliver these events. It was amazing to see how each one of our team grew as people, as they gained more confidence in facilitating group meetings. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to be part of this program and can't wait to participate in future years!

I was surprised by how quickly we formed meaningful, positive relationships within our Operations Team and with the students, which has made volunteering with a Specialist Role Team a pricelessly joyful experience. I was initially on the fence about volunteering, but being a part of this community has shown me two things: 1) that any hope we share to others, through teaching or otherwise, is never wasted, and 2) that joy shared is joy amplified. So, come join our community - you won't regret it.
